On November 24, 2004, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) became an authorized national standards developer by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). As an authorized developer, GEI can seek approval of standards specific to indoor air quality issues.

Under ANSI rules, the standard development process begins with the issuance of a PINS (Project Initiation Notification System), publicly communicating an organization's intent to develop a standard. For more information on the ANSI process, please go to: www.ansi.org.

In April 2009, the American National Standard Institute approved the ANSI/GREENGUARD Environmental Institute Mold And Moisture Management Standard For New Construction (ANSI/GEI – MMS1001). This standard was developed to help reduce the risk of losses to lenders, insurers and building developers due to mold growth and improve conditions for occupants. By providing this best practice guidance for safeguarding against moisture and mold damage, GREENGUARD Environmental Institute hopes to improve architects’, designers’ and builders’ understanding of the potential impact that moisture intrusion can have on a building.
